Natural Me!

Hey FAB Readers! For those of you who don't know, I have been living in LA for the past 8yrs. Ever since my relocation out west, my hair has suffered. Mainly due to the difference in water (the water here is harder than in Chicago and Alabama where I formally dwelled). This difference cause MAJOR damage to my hair. I'm talking about made it DRY, BRITTLE, and so UN-SEXY and UN-FAB. Because of that, I opted to wear weaves for the past 5 years (not to mention weaves are the "in thing" in LA). Well I did do a short cut 3 years ago which was SUPER CUTE then went back into a weave again for 2 years. Then I made excuses for maintaining a weave (such as I have to so I can work out..ummm I can still work out). Okay soooooo now I am back and rocking my natural hair and LOVING IT! I feel so free and more like my old self... ahhhhhhhhhh.... SO REFRESHING! I am thinking I will maintain my natural hair of a while and rock a weave when ever I get the urge but for now.. I'm GOOD!

QUEEN MATERIAL?

There has been a HUGE uproar on the Hampton University campus surrounding the 2009 non black Miss Hampton University, Nikole Churchill, a Hawaiian Senior at the University. Alum and current students appear to be divided on the issue. Students are saying that it's not so much the color of Nikole's skin as it is about the content of her character. Nikole Churchill is a transfer student to the University and does not attend the University's Hampton campus but instead attends a satellite branch of the Historically Black College. Students were also in an outrage because the Queen is not active in any campus organizations and to go a step further has rarely if ever been seen on campus!!! IS THIS the kind of Queen that you would want representing YOUR University to speak about change that needs to take place and advocate for student rights when she has never had the experience as a campus student on the University grounds? FAB readers we are flusters, not due to our attendance of HBCU's (one of us a former Hamptonian as well) but in this case, we are looking at the fact that is Queen Nikole as never had the experience of being a true Hamptonian. There are things that we have gone through, struggles overcome (such as registration and non air conditioned buildings and dorms), life long friendships established, football games and step shows attended, organizations joined, and leadership skills put into action on campus to earn our stripes at Hampton University. What if all Queens transferred in for their senior year took 4-11 classes and never walked the "yard" or campus?! Just had to get this off our our chest and give you some food for thought!!

Lara Stone does Blackface for French Vogue

Fab readers some of you may remember Lara Stone from our Fab Model of the Week post. However this week we have some not so fab news to post. It seems as though Carine Roitfeld and Steven Klein felt it was a good idea to have supermodel Lara Stone in blackface for the October issue of French Vogue. While many have argued that this is a portrayal of art and they are known for their controversial spreads, it is also known that blackface is deeply seeded with racism in the United States. While many say that since it was French Vogue so it doesn't carry the same meaning (racial tensions are high in France currently) the photographer Steven Klein is American so he knows the impact/backlash of doing a shoot of this nature would bring. Let us know what you think is it art or racism?

BTW- The issue that is dedicated to supermodels does not feature one African American model (or any model of color)

Weekend Wammies...

It wouldn't be right if we did not start off the week by discussing the 2 major SAD and CARELESS cases of the weekend. From one side of the globe to the other, celebrities have gone mad and spazzed out! The reasons are questionable but case in point is both were viewed world wide.

The usually FAB Serena Williams had her "run in" on Saturday which led to a "kick out" at the US Open. It was said by an official that Williams made verbal threats by saying "I will kill you." Serena also had an episode earlier in the game where she threw her racket down and broke it... Serena must realize that people have been sitting waiting for her downfall for a LONG time. We personally don't think that she made the threat but hey it were her word against the official and of course they graciously sided with the official. Sad case, we know her feelings were completely crushed! Having worked hard for the tournament for it to end like that... Her mother and sister were in attendance.



Then your boy Kanye at the VMA's... What on Earth can we say about that. Taylor Swift won the first award for Female Video of the Year and during her acceptance speech, Kanye being Kanye walks on stage and takes the mic from the young darling. He made a point to tell her and everyone that Beyonce's video was the better than Taylor's really...really, and walked off stage! WOW, so you just had to said Kanye didn't you?! Well his randomness got him and Ms. Amber Rose kicked out of the VMA's. We know she was hurt that she didn't all that camera time that she thrives off of. Well when Kanye was sent home he did post a partial apology to Taylor, her mother, and the fans (his and hers). We say partial because Kanye during the apology continued to rant about how Beyonce's video was the best of the decade (that's a 10 year stint)! Kanye exclaimed that he was just being real. We couldn't help but to be amused because we have figured that Kanye is from Chicago and we ARE known for keeping it real but Kanye you were at the VMA's (wrong place and time for all that realness)! We are hoping that he enrolls in some Yoga or Meditation classes immediately! Maybe he needs to have a sit down with Russel Simmons to help him get on the right path. Read the apology and tell us what you think.

Please, Stay Off The Drugs....

Okay SO we have been in mourning all weekend long about DJ AM.... But we have come to find out that the "11.5 year clean and sober" DJ was found in his apartment wearing sweatpants and a crack pipe laid next to him in the bed, as well as other prescription drugs. The police came to the home after getting a phone call from a friend of the DJ that hadn't heard from him in hours and also learned that DJ AM never caught his flight to Vegas, where he was scheduled to work Friday night (@RAIN). We are still mourning but have also come to the realization that drugs are never the answer... short escape maybe, but NEVER the answer to your problems; only the beginning of new problems. RIP DJ AM, you will be missed! Be sure to catch him on his upcoming reality series 'Gone Too Far' to be aired on MTV.... So Sad

Well, our FABULOUS Pressident celebrated his 48th Birthday yesterday (August 4, 2009) and his first birthday as the President of the United States. We just couldn't resist paying our respects to him a Fabulously Chic and Cheap! The fam is still vacationing at Camp David but I am sure that they have something planned for him this upcoming weekend. Happy Birthday President Obama!! You are OH SO FAB!




Lindsay Lohan... Taking a Crack at Fashion

We have been reading fashion updates and have learned the past rehab-attending actress, Lindsay Lohan, is in talks with French Fashion House, Emanuel Ungaro, to become a creative consultant for the brand.

The thing is that this possible deal signing is creating quite a stir in the office and the head designer is threatening to leave the company, and take his team with him if the deal goes through. Estaban Cortazar, head designer, is furious and insulted that the company is even considering having Lindsay's name being attached to the brand.

We here at Fabulously Chic and Cheap cannot get mad at the designer for his feeling, as we have never viewed Lohan as a fabulous or chic dresser either. Ungaro feels that Lindsay would bring new energy to the brand but we are not quite in agreement with the possible signing. I mean surely there is a better selection of FABULOUS actresses that could sign the deal and bring more integrity and creativity to the Emanuel Ungaro, luxury brand.

Inspiring Words from Andre Leon Talley

Fab readers while checking out The Fashion Bomb, I came across an interview that Andre Leon Talley did with CNN in regards to students who are graduating in fashion or want to pursue fashion the industry. The main point that he stresses throughout the interview is to stay with it regardless of how long it takes....if it is truly your passion. Fab readers I can not agree more, as someone who changed their major junior year of college (to Fashion Marketing) and moved across the country to pursue their passion, I support everything that he says. Even in this economy I believe that if it is something that you want, you persevere and push through until you reach your goal. I know this is something that everyone says but it is true, and I have to remind myself everyday to continue my tunnel vision until my goals have been met. My Black Vogue Wall

So everyone that knows me knows that I hate white walls, but I didn't have the energy to paint. Then over the weekend I finally got the motivation to decorate my apartment...thanks to a killer 90% off moving sale at Design Market Decor in Topanga Mall in Canoga Park, CA. Check out my fave living room wall with a few of my fave pics from the black issue of Italian Vogue and put them in frames from the 99cent store and placed them around a frame from Design Market Decor. So fab readers what do you think of my latest addition to my place.

Dear Malia and Sasha,

I know that you've both had a lot of fun these last two years on the campaign trail, going to picnics and parades and state fairs, eating all sorts of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn't have let you have. But I also know that it hasn't always been easy for you and Mom, and that as excited as you both are about that new puppy, it doesn't make up for all the time we've been apart. I know how much I've missed these past two years, and today I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey.

When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me - about how I'd make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn't seem so important anymore. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours. And I realized that my own life wouldn't count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for happiness and fulfillment in yours. In the end, girls, that's why I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation.

I want all our children to go to schools worthy of their potential-schools that challenge them, inspire them, and instill in them a sense of wonder about the world around them. I want them to have the chance to go to college-even if their parents aren't rich. And I want them to get good jobs: jobs that pay well and give them benefits like health care, jobs that let them spend time with their own kids and retire with dignity.

I want us to push the boundaries of discovery so that you'll live to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our planet cleaner and safer. And I want us to push our own human boundaries to reach beyond the divides of race and region, gender and religion that keep us from seeing the best in each other.

Sometimes we have to send our young men and women into war and other dangerous situations to protect our country-but when we do, I want to make sure that it is only for a very good reason, that we try our best to settle our differences with others peacefully, and that we do everything possible to keep our servicemen and women safe. And I want every child to understand that the blessings these brave Americans fight for are not free-that with the great privilege of being a citizen of this nation comes great responsibility.

That was the lesson your grandmother tried to teach me when I was your age, reading me the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and telling me about the men and women who marched for equality because they believed those words put to paper two centuries ago should mean something.

She helped me understand that America is great not because it is perfect but because it can always be made better-and that the unfinished work of perfecting our union falls to each of us. It's a charge we pass on to our children, coming closer with each new generation to what we know America should be.

I hope both of you will take up that work, righting the wrongs that you see and working to give others the chances you've had. Not just because you have an obligation to give something back to this country that has given our family so much-although you do have that obligation. But because you have an obligation to yourself. Because it is only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential.

These are the things I want for you-to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have. That's why I've taken our family on this great adventure.

I am so proud of both of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am grateful every day for your patience, poise, grace, and humor as we prepare to start our new life together in the White House.
